Fragments of a Madwoman

Synopsis

Straddling installation, performance and autofiction, the work explores the artist's psychotic experience, the causes of its outbreak and its subsequent recovery. Through a multifaceted use of different languages such as embroidery, sound and corporeality, Fragments d'una Boja proposes an immersion in the broken universe of mental health. Collectivizing the personal experience of playwright Mireia Juanals, the action of the spectator is considered as an active agent, pointing out their own gaze as the cause and consequence of the psychotic outbreak: the judgment of the other.

A bed emerges on stage, inviting the viewer to lie down between its tenderly embroidered sheets. They are greeted by the word “fraude” (fraud) on one of the pillows; on the other, “vaga” (vagància), from where one hears in a loop the thoughts that run through the artist sleeping with his monsters, or rather, without being able to do so. In this installation, the main themes that underpin Fragments d'una Boja are already presented and interrelated: self-sabotage, the need for approval and love, and the obsessive search for perfection.

This game of conjunctions and disjunctions overlap and collide between the rawness of the scenes and the attitude of denial that emerges from time to time in the dramatic text. The body as a battlefield. Mireia Juanals warns of the need to rethink ourselves outside the triumphant lethargy of a hyperproductive society.
